Andrew Kent’s right leg was saved from amputation by a revolutionary new stem cell technique that saw it being fused back together again. For the first time in Britain, stem cells were taken from the bone marrow of his hip and mixed with a new collagen gel called Cartifill.
The formed paste was smeared into the fractures before his leg was placed in a metal cage to gently squeeze the bones back together. The cage was removed six months after the initial procedure with a good prognosis.
The Cartifill collagen gel was invented by orthopaedic surgeon Professor Seok Jung Kim, from South Korea. He was present to see the operation take place. The technique costs far less than alternative methods, at only a few hundred pounds.
