Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a treatment used for a variety of common orthopaedic conditions. PRP is a concentration of platelet cells taken from the patient’s own blood. These platelets contain growth factors which, after concentration in a centrifuge and reintroduction into affected areas of the body, can help in with the healing process of chronic injuries.
What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and what are PRP injections?
Platelets in the blood play an integral role in the body’s natural healing process of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints. By spinning a small sample of a patient’s own blood in a centrifuge, these platelets are first isolated, then concentrated and finally reintroduced, thus significantly accelerating the healing process. Innotec Healthcare’s PRP offers a much greater platelet concentration than other alternatives available, greatly improving the potential outcome from this treatment.
PRP has also been shown to improve function and reduce pain in people with tendonitis or chronic tendinosis conditions such as tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow.
PRP procedures are normally carried out on a day case basis, thus minimalising disruption to the patient. By focusing on repairing damaged cells rather than using more invasive procedures, PRP empowers patients to regain their quality of life.
PRP treatment can reduce or negate the need for anti-inflammatory medication. Adverse side effects of PRP are extremely limited as the patient’s own blood is re-injected back into the body, meaning that the body will not react negatively or reject the Platelet-Rich Plasma.
Ultrasound imaging is sometimes used to guide the injection.
